Laser Hair Removal

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by heating the pigment in hair follicles, rendering them inactive and unable to grow hair. The laser treatments work best on darker hair, but is effective for all skin types. The energy of the laser penetrates your outer layers of skin but causes no damage to skin tissues.

What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?

Most places on your body that have unwanted hair can be treated. Men and women can choose laser hair removal for the following areas:

  • Back and chest
  • Bikini line
  • Legs and arms
  • Upper lip and chin
  • Underarms

Talk to Dr. Leng about the areas that you’d like to have treated so he can put together a customized treatment plan for you.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on how your hair and skin respond as well as the area of your body being treated. Usually, you receive treatments until hair stops growing, and for most people that’s between 7 and 11 sessions. Sometimes you need fewer or more to get hair growth under control.

Laser hair removal is most effective when hair is in its growth phase of the cycle. All hair isn’t in the same phase at the same time, so multiple sessions ensure you treat all of the hair when it’s in the growth period.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Laser hair removal is quite tolerable. Most people feel warmth and prickling as the laser passes over their skin, but tolerate the treatment well. Ice packs are provided afterwards to soothe treated areas.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

You must have the hair follicles intact to benefit from laser hair removal, so don’t tweeze or wax for about six weeks prior to treatment. Shaving is OK because it doesn’t affect the follicle.

Avoid the sun prior for a few weeks prior to treatment, because tanned skin can compromise the effects of your laser session.

Is downtime needed after laser hair removal?

You don’t need to schedule any downtime following laser hair removal sessions. You may have some redness in the treatment areas for a few hours post-treatment, but there are no other major side effects.

Do be careful about sun exposure for the weeks following each laser hair removal session. Your skin is temporarily extra sensitive to ultraviolet rays and can burn more easily.
