Liposuction

How does liposuction work?

During liposuction, a small, thin tube called a cannula is used to remove localized areas of fat from your body. Dr. Leng uses either local or regional anesthesia to numb the area to be treated. Then he marks the treatment sites and makes a small incision.

The cannula is placed in the incision and attached to a suction device that removes the fat. A session can last several hours if you’re having a lot of fat removed or multiple areas treated.

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so you go home to recover on the same day as your procedure.

Who is a candidate for liposuction?

You should be in overall good health and live a healthy lifestyle before considering liposuction because liposuction is not designed for comprehensive weight loss. It’s best for localized areas of stubborn fat that are unresponsive to traditional weight-loss methods.

What areas can be treated with liposuction?

Many areas that hold on to fat even when you diet and exercise respond well to liposuction. These include the:

  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Abdomen
  • Chest
  • Arms
  • Chin
  • Calves and ankles

Talk to Dr. Leng about the areas that are troublesome to you to determine if they’re appropriate for treatment with liposuction.

While liposuction provides a slimming effect, it cannot change the appearance of cellulite or stretch marks.

What results should I expect from liposuction?

After the procedure, you may have some minor bruising and pain near the incision site. Some people choose to take a few days off work following liposuction.

As you recover during the weeks after your liposuction, you’ll notice some contour irregularities as the remaining fat and tissue settle into place and swelling subsides. Your optimal results will be evident after a few months and you’ll look leaner and slimmer.

How long do the results of liposuction last?

The results of liposuction are permanent as long as you maintain a healthy weight. If you do gain weight after liposuction, you may experience a different distribution of fat and may accumulate excess fat in areas other than the treatment area.
